GUIDE FOR PLANTING IN LOAM OR SANDY SOIL WITH AVERAGE DRAINAGE
  1. Dig a hole with irregular sides at least 1 to 2 feet wider and no deeper than root depth. Do not loosen soil in bottom.
  2. Thoroughly mix ¼ cup of 8-10-8* fertilizer and 20% peat moss to one bushel of soil.
  3. Mix soil and water to reduce air pockets. Apply mixture until free water stands at top of hole. Do not compact soil by tamping.
  4. Set root line of tree 1 to 2 inches higher than lawn level. Work soil in until roots are covered slightly.
  5. Cover with 1 to 2 inches of hardwood bark mulch but keep bark away from stem to prevent stem rot.
  6. For trees over 6 feet use 3 guide wires covered with rubber hose where they contact the tree bark.

*Add cottonseed meal for acid loving plants such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas at ½ cup per foot of height.
