FEATURED PLANT
Mitchell & Sons carries a wide variety of plants to perfectly accent your yard and garden. This month,
Mitchell & Sons is showcasing our amazing jade plants. These vibrant emerald colored houseplants
are the perfect accent to any indoor space.

What are Jade Plants?Jade Plants are beautiful houseplants which are easy to grow indoors. These succulents have a tree-like shape and green leaves.  Larger specimens make stunning potted plants to accent any room while smaller Jade Plants are ideal for windowsills and moderate sized terrariums. When the plant has reached 10 years of age, it will flower regularly each winter. New Jade Plant blossoms start off pure white but gradually turn pink as they age.

To keep your Jade Plants healthy, it is a good idea to feed them a balanced all-purpose 20-20-20 formulated liquid soluble fertilizer. For best results, this fertilizer should be applied every two weeks from spring to early fall only. Jade plants should never be fertilized in winter, as this inhibits the formation of blossoms. Also in winter, keep your Jade Plants in a room where the temperature does not exceed 55 to 60°F. The cooler temperatures will help encourage the formation of blooms. Be sure to allow the soil to dry out a little between watering, as Jade Plants do not like to be too wet. Jade plants have few problems with insects other than soft shell scale, however this insect can easily be removed from the leaves of the plant with a soft cloth and a little water. Jade Plants will periodically need to be repotted into a larger pot to accommodate root growth.

It is best to add organic fertilizer and worm castings to the soil when repotting Jades, as the added
boost of nutrients will activate beneficial microbes in the soil, increase water retention and soil
aeration and promote further root growth. Worm castings may be applied additionally to the top of
the soil of plants which have already been upgraded to larger pots, to give them a continuous boost
throughout the growing season.

Mitchell & Sons carries a wide selection of Jades Plants, in sizes ranging from 6 inches to 3 feet in
height. We specialize in the standard variety of Jade, as well as the smaller leaved cultivar. Standard
Jade Plant leaves are longer and wider than those of their smaller leaved cousins, reaching a mature
length of 3 inches. The foliage of the smaller leaved cultivar is much more compact, having a mature
length that does not exceed 1 ½ inches.
